Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information this website collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. It covers the website at innerstandingpsychotherapy.com and the ways you can contact the practice through it.
If you become a client, your health information is protected under HIPAA and state law. How that information is handled is described in the Notice of Privacy Practices, which applies in addition to this policy.
Who runs this website
Innerstanding Psychotherapy PLLC, the private practice of Sean O'Connor, MA, LMHC. The practice provides online therapy to adults in Washington, Florida, Colorado, Idaho, Vermont, Delaware and South Carolina.
Information you give us
- Contact and consultation requests. When you fill in a form, request a free consultation, or email or text the practice, we receive what you send: typically your name, email address, phone number, the state you live in and your message.
- Email and text messages. Standard email and text messaging are convenient but are not fully secure. Please keep what you send through them to scheduling and general questions. If you text or email us first, we will take that as your permission to reply the same way.
Information collected automatically
- Server logs. Our website host, Squarespace, records basic technical data such as IP address, browser type, pages visited and the time of each visit. This is used to keep the site running and secure.
- Cookies. The site uses the cookies needed for it to function and for basic, aggregate visitor statistics. We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels or social media trackers.
How we use information
- To reply to you, schedule a consultation and answer questions.
- To confirm that you live in a state where the practice is licensed.
- To run, secure and improve the website.
- To meet legal and professional obligations.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for third party advertising.
Who we share information with
- Service providers that help run the practice, such as our website host, email provider and, once you are a client, our electronic health record and telehealth platform. These providers may only use information to provide their service to us.
- When the law requires it, for example in response to a valid court order, or where disclosure is necessary to prevent serious harm.
How long we keep information
Website enquiries are kept for as long as needed to respond to you and for a reasonable period afterwards. If you become a client, your clinical record is kept for the period required by the licensing laws of your state.
Security
Client records are kept in a HIPAA-compliant electronic health record, and sessions take place on a HIPAA-compliant video platform. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, which is why we ask you not to send sensitive clinical detail by ordinary email or text.
Your choices
- You can ask what information we hold about you from the website, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Clinical records are governed by the Notice of Privacy Practices and state record keeping laws, and some information must be kept even if you ask for deletion.
- You can stop receiving non-clinical messages from us at any time by telling us.
- Depending on the state you live in, you may have additional privacy rights under state law. Contact us and we will help.
Children
This website and the practice serve adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Links to other sites
The site links to outside resources such as 988 and insurer websites. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which we do not control.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
