Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate
Under federal law, health care providers must give clients who do not have insurance, or who choose not to use their insurance, a written estimate of the expected cost of their care. This is called a Good Faith Estimate.
What you are entitled to
- You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of non-emergency health care services, including psychotherapy.
- You can ask for an estimate before you schedule a service. If you schedule at least three business days ahead, you will receive the estimate in writing within one business day of scheduling. If you ask for one, you will receive it within three business days.
- If you are billed at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. You have 120 days from the date of the bill to do so.
- Keep a copy of your Good Faith Estimate with your records.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.
What my estimate looks like
- The standard fee is $160 for a 50-minute session. A 15-minute initial consultation is free.
- Most people meet weekly or every other week. The number of sessions depends on what you are working on and is something we review together as we go.
- Your written estimate will list the expected fee per session, the number of sessions we anticipate over a set period, and the total. It is an estimate, not a contract. You can stop at any time, and you will only be charged for sessions you attend or miss without 24 hours' notice.
- If your plan changes in a way that affects the estimate, I will give you an updated one.
If you use insurance
If you are using an in-network plan, your benefits and cost sharing are set by your plan, and the Good Faith Estimate rules for uninsured and self-pay clients do not apply. For out-of-network care, I can provide a superbill you can submit to your plan for possible reimbursement, and you are welcome to ask for a Good Faith Estimate as well.
